Client Project: Contemporary Coastal Painting Turns This Family Room Into a Peaceful Summer Retreat

Hey all! It’s summer and the water is calling! When it’s this hot out, does anyone else just keep dreaming of their favorite waterside hang? Why not try bringing those same refreshing, serene vibes into your interior decor with a contemporary coastal painting?

For a recent project, we filled a large empty wall in my client’s family room with a fantastic landscape by DC area artist Martha Spak. This 36×48 in. original painting, titled Up River, is the perfect size to display above a family sized sofa. We added a gorgeous custom floater frame to complete this stunning look!

Ocean, bay, lake, pond, marsh, river, creek… what’s your favorite summer spot??

Coastal Contemporary Painting at Martha Spak Gallery

Up River by DC area artist Martha Spak on display at Martha Spak Gallery

Spak has her own eponymous gallery located at DC’s District Wharf. As a professional painter, she is mindful of current interior design trends. Spak wants her paintings, and all the artwork that she exhibits, to fit seamlessly into your existing interior décor. Ultimately, she wants her work to be easy to live with and also to be something that you cannot live without.

Custom Framing

But before I could install Up River, this coastal contemporary painting needed custom framing to match it’s elegant, yet unfussy vibe. As part of my art advisory services, I picked out several framing choices for my client to review. We loved this clean, natural wood floater frame with a brushed silver top and white-washed sides.

A frame sample reveals how the overall framing will look

A floater frame is aptly named because it appears as if it never touches the canvas. It looks as if it is “floating” around the painting. A floater frame offers a sleek and contemporary framing look. In this case, it nods towards coastal with it’s underlying natural wood tone and white-washed sides.

With it’s gorgeous new framing, this piece is ready for installation.

Installation

Installation day is always my favorite! I love seeing client projects come together and this one did not disappoint!

This 36×48 in. painting is in perfect scale with the family’s large sectional sofa and leather ottoman. Moreover, the size creates a window effect, giving the client a beautiful scenic view to the outdoors. Breathtaking!

What a perfect choice Lauren. I could get lost in the million + possibilities of that endless water. It reminds me of the book “Peace Like a River”.

Thank you! Yes, I love a painting that you can get lost in. No matter how many times you look at it, there is still something new to uncover. I will need to look up “Peace Like a River” and add it to my reading list!
