On The Cover

If you follow me on Instagram, then you already know how excited I was to spot a local artist on the cover of the March 2019 issue of HGTV magazine!  That gorgeous floral in the black frame is A Room for Flowers 3 by Alexandria, Virginia based Jennifer Allevato.

The cover of the March 2019 issue of HGTV magazine has a springtime feel, featuring a sitting area that incorporates pinks, blues, and yellows into the design scheme.

Meet the Artist Behind the Work

Allevato’s paintings are a thoroughly modern take on a traditional subject matter: the still-life.  Influenced by post-impressionism, Allevato embraces bold, saturated colors and forms that are not strictly constrained by realism.  Through bright tones and relaxed lines, her paintings convey the joyful feelings of spring.  They call to mind those delightful moments when we slow down to enjoy the sun’s warmth on our face and appreciate the resurgence of life and beauty after the gray days of winter.

Jennifer Allevato's studio is filled with her paintings of colorful floral compositions.

“I love creating colorful, thoughtful, beautiful pieces of art that bring a little joy to your home.”

Allevato is not afraid to let you see the artist’s hand in her work.  For instance, can we talk about those lovely, well-placed drips that appear in many of her paintings?  Sometimes the drips are subtle, peeking out from behind an arrangement of flowers or softened in the setting by additional layers of paint (as in From a Table in Giverny, below).  Other times, the drips are more prominent, along with loose, painterly brushstrokes visible in some of her color field backgrounds (see Floral Variation No. 3, below).  Allevato wants us to see the movement of paint on her canvas. In this way, the creative process is brought to the forefront and is celebrated as a part of the composition.

Inside the artist's studio, works by Jennifer Allevato lean against a cabinet and are displayed on shelves on the wall above.

“I believe that art is meant to be shared with others. My hope is that you will treasure my work for years to come.”
